Callian (Var)
Callian is a commune with 3287 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.
Geography
Callian is a Provencal mountain village in the far east of the Var, near the border with the department of Alpes- Maritimes. The village is located about 35 km west of Cannes and as far north of Fréjus and Saint- Raphaël. The site is dominated by a castle from the 15th century, surrounded by narrow streets with old houses, from the center of the old town center stands out.
From Callian one has a wide view over the valley, Tanneron and the Lac de Saint -Cassien the Esterel mountains and the Massif des Maures.
Personalities
- The French physician and botanist Michel Darluc (1717-1783) spent a part of his life in Callian.
- The French writer, polemicist, republican Salonnière and women's rights activist Juliette Adam, nee Lambert (1836-1936) died in Callian.
- The French journalist and politician Georges Clemenceau talked many times on Callian.
- The fashion designer Christian Dior (1905-1957) was buried in Callian.
- Emmanuelle Cinquin (1908-2008), Belgian-French nun and "Mother of the garbage people of Cairo ," lived since 1993 in Callian, where she died in her 100th year of life.
- The French Expressionist Edouard Goerg (1893-1969) lived for many years in Callian, where he died and is buried in the grounds of his former estate.
