Calliano (Trentino)

Calliano ( German outdated Rossbach ) is a municipality with 1677 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) and is situated in Trentino in Vallagarina. As a strategically important point of the middle Adige Valley was the scene of bloody battles.

On August 10, 1487 Tyrolean troops attacked under the Alsatian Landsknecht leader Frederick Kappler at Calliano the Venetian army at that passed the Adige just over a bridge of boats. The leader of the Venetian army, Roberto da San Severino, drowned in the river.

More battles to Calliano took place in the wake of the First Coalition War from September to November, 1796.
