Callie Crossley

Callie Y. Crossley ( born 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American journalist, radio presenter, commentator and film producer.

Life and work

Callie Crossley was the daughter of Samuel Crossley, cost analyst with the United States Postal Service, and Mattie R. Crossley, faculty advisor to the Memphis City Schools, Memphis. In 1966 she was in the wake of desegregation to only 18 black students who attended the local Central High School. The school newspaper, the Crossley wrote a column, she was one of two black employees. She reported later by daily psychological assault during this time, but they endured and what they have ultimately benefited. She then studied until 1973 at Wellesley College with a major in English.

Crossley's professional career began as a reporter at the TV station WREG - TV in Memphis. After a stopover in Indianapolis in 1977, she went to Boston, where they broadcast the 10 O'Clock News produced at WGBH - TV. She then worked for 13 years for the ABC news magazine view 20 / 20th There they produced contributions from the fields of health and medicine. As a commentator, she worked among others in the radio program On the Media ( WNYC ) and News & Notes (NPR ), as well as CNN and Beat the Press ( WGBH - TV).

In 1982, she received at the age of 30 years at Harvard University a scholarship for professional journalists, a Nieman Fellowship and studied during a one-year sabbatical biomedical ethics, literature and history. She was married at this time with a doctor.

Together with James A. Crossley DeVinney worked two and a half years to Eyes on the Prize (1987 ) with, a documentary series about the history of the civil rights movement in the United States. They produced the fourth and the sixth episode of the first season, in which she also wrote the screenplay and directed by led. The consequence of Bridge to Freedom was awarded, among others, an Oscar nomination and an Emmy.

2003 Crossley was a senior producer on the PBS series This Far by Faith: African-American Spiritual Journeys involved. From 2010 to 2012, she hosted the The Callie Crossley Show, a daily current radio talk show on WGBH radio. She then moved to a program similar format, the Boston Public Radio. She is also a seminar program manager for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University and is active member of the jury for the award of various established journalism awards as the awards of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
