Calliope (music)

The steam organ, and Calliope ( the Muse Calliope ), is an organ whose pipes are not operated with air but with water vapor. You will still be counted among the aerophones.

1855 the inventor Joshua C. Stoddard received a patent on the instrument. It was initially planned to install it as a " steam-powered chimes " on church towers. Because of the very high pressure and large volume steam organs are usually operated in the open air, for example at fairs and cruise ships. In the 19th century there were constant accidents due to explosion of the instruments. The largest steam organ had 44 pipes.
