Calorimeter#Bomb calorimeters

The bomb calorimeter is used to determine the calorific value of a substance in an oxygen atmosphere and high pressure. For this purpose, a so-called bomb is introduced into a container filled with water heated steel container, which can be assumed to be adiabatic.

In the bomb an oxygen atmosphere prevails under a pressure of 20-30 bar. The substance to be measured is placed in a crucible in the bomb and ignited and burnt by an electric arc. By measuring the heating of the bomb calorimeter can be closed to the energy value.

There are several measurement principles. The most common are the adiabatic and isoperibolic method.
