Calvin Pollard

Calvin Pollard ( born June 14, 1797 in New Braintree, Massachusetts, † 1850 ) was an American architect who is best known for his early draft of the Brooklyn Borough Hall. He also designed numerous other buildings in New York.

Today many documents by Pollard store in the New York Public Library.

Life

Pollard was born the son of John Pollard and Kezia Heyward. In 1803 his family moved to Cazenovia, 1818 in New York City.

Career

1834 Pollard designed, among other things, the St. Paul 's Episcopal Church and Rectory in Ossining, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In the same year he won a competition for the design of the City Hall of Brooklyn. After the construction of the foundation of the building, the construction was stopped because of financial difficulties, in 1845 took over the work Gamaliel King.

1836 Pollard built the Brandreth Pill Factory in Ossining, the part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1980.

The courthouse in St. Petersburg (Virginia) was built 1838-1840 by Pollard, it is also one of his last works. The building played a role during the siege of Petersburg, since 1973 it belongs to the National Register of Historic Places.
