Camaiore

Camaiore is a town in the province of Lucca in Tuscany with 32 518 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

The center of Camaiore is located in the north-western Tuscany, about 9 km from the Ligurian Sea. Located along the coast lies the district of Lido di Camaiore, which is a well-known seaside resort on the Versilia. The provincial capital of Lucca is about 25 km south-east, the regional capital Florence about 80 km south-east, the Ligurian town of La Spezia about 60 km to the northwest. The nearest major town is Viareggio, located about 10 km southwest.

Camaiore is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1485 GG. Important waters in urban areas are the river Camaiore ( 8 of 8 km in the municipality, of which two as a boundary to Viareggio ) and the Torrenti Fred Dana ( 8 of 29 km in the municipality ), Lucese ( 8 of 8 km in the municipality ) and the Rio Summonti ( 6 of 6 km in the municipality ).

The neighboring municipalities are Lucca, Massa Pink, Pescaglia, Pietrasanta, Camaiore and Viareggio.

History

First mentioned was the place in the 8th century, when the Abbey of San Pietro was founded. The first city wall was built in 1255 from Lucca. In 1442 the city finally fell to Lucca, where he remained until today.

  • Badia di Camaiore, also called Badia di San Pietro. Abbey near the town center, which was founded in 760 by Benedictine monks. Has been completely restored in the 11th century.
