Camargo Guarnieri

Mozart Camargo Guarnieri ( born 1 February 1907 in Tietê, † January 13, 1993 in São Paulo) was a Brazilian composer.

The son of an Italian immigrant had his first piano lessons at the age of ten years at Virginio slides. In 1923 he came to São Paulo, where he attended the Conservatorio Musical de São Paulo e Dramático, continued his piano training at Sá Pereira and Ernani Braga and studied composition and conducting at Lamberto Baldi.

1928 Mário de Andrade learned Guarnieri know, contributed greatly to shaping his future work by making it known him with the Brazilian folklore. In 1938 he won an award for his work Flor de Tremembé a study trip to Paris. There he studied counterpoint, composition and music aesthetics at Charles Koechlin, orchestral conducting with Franz Rühlmann and was a student of Nadia Boulanger.

In the 1940s Guarnieri held several times in the U.S., where he performed his works. In 1950 he published the Carta Aberta aos Músicos e Críticos do Brasil ( Open letter to the musicians and critics of Brazil ), in which he took a critical look with the argument advanced by Hans -Joachim Koellreutter and the group Musica viva twelve-tone technique and a profound discussion in the Brazilian cultural scene triggered.

Since 1945, Guarnieri was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Música. In 1960 he became director of the Conservatorio Dramático s musical in São Paulo. He also taught at the University of São Paulo, where in 1975 he founded the University Orchestra. Among his pupils were, inter alia, Osvaldo Lacerda and Almeida Prado.

He was honored by the Organization of American States with the Gabriela Mistral Prize in 1992 and received the title of " Greatest Composer of the three contemporary America."
