Camargue horse

The Camargue horse is a small robust domestic horse, predominantly in the Camargue - is bred the Rhone delta in southern France in a wild stud.

Exterior

The Camargue horse is strongly built, with a short neck and steeper shoulder. Mostly, it's Roman nose and has strong curtain. With him also Geißbartbildung is possible. The foals at birth dark brown to black, bright however with increasing age. With about 10 years, they are completely white. The Camargue horse is considered spätwüchsig and is only fully grown at 7-8 years. His hooves are above average in size to prevent sinking into the swamp, but still very hard. It has flat-lying in the head eyes and small ears. It reaches an average of more than 25 years, a very high for semi- wild horses age.

Interior

The Camargue horse is considered to be very resistant and frugal. This property goes back to its harsh living conditions in the Rhone delta, where it is constantly exposed to cold, damp soil in summer great heat, and in the other seasons. Then there is the mistral, which blows 63 percent of the year on average. It can eat with closed nostrils under water.

Breeding history

As a race, the Camargue horse was first recognized in the 1960s. It is mentioned for the first time of Gaius Julius Caesar, who was of the horse so much that he had to create two stud farms in the area of Arles. In the race are still to find traces of oriental horses that probably goes back to the mixing with Arabs and Berbers during the invasion of the Moors in Southern France 730.
