Camenca

Каменка ( Kamenka ) ( in Russian)

Camenca (Russian Каменка / Kamenka ) is a city in Transnistria and Moldova with about 9400 inhabitants. It is the administrative capital of the homonymous Rajons and lies on the River Dniester.

History

The area in which today Camenca located, belonged in the early Middle Ages to the Kievan Rus', the Principality of Halych - Volodymyr, later the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and then to Poland - Lithuania. The first mention of today's Camenca was in 1609, the city sees the 1608 today as their founding date. In 1793, the area now Transnistria fell, and thus Camenca, to the Russian Empire. The German - Russian nobles Pyotr Wittgenstein played an important role in the development of the city in the 19th century.

After the October Revolution, the area was part of the Soviet Union and belonged first to the Ukrainian republic, from 1940 to the then Moldavian SSR. During the Second World War, the Transnistria region, and thus Camenca was briefly occupied by Romania in 1944 but retaken by the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991, now claimed Moldova, the Transnistrian region. According to internal tensions Transnistria said, however, going from Moldova. Moldova tried to retake the region by force of arms, but suffered a defeat here against Transnistrian troops.

Transnistria since 1992 is therefore de facto independent from Moldova, even if that status was internationally been recognized by any state and is usually still considered to be part of Moldova.
