The Cameron Parish (French: Paroisse de Cameron ) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. In 2010, the Parish had 6839 inhabitants and a population density of 2 people per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Cameron.

Geography

The Parish is located in the extreme southwest of Louisiana is bordered to the south by the Gulf of Mexico and to the west by Texas. It has an area of ​​5003 square kilometers, of which 1602 square miles are water.

History

The Cameron Parish was formed in 1870 from portions of Calcasieu Parish. It was named for Simon Cameron (1799-1889), a U.S. Senator and Secretary of War of the United States from Pennsylvania. On June 27, 1957, large parts of the Parish were devastated by Hurricane Audrey. Here, 390 people died. On September 24, 2005 Hurricane Rita devastated again larger areas.
