Camil Ressu

Camil Ressu ( born January 28, 1880 in Galaţi, † April 1, 1962 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian painter.

Ressu studied from 1897 to 1899 at the scoala Naţională de Arte Frumoase at George Demetrescu Mirea, then in Iaşi Gheorghe Popovici at. After a stay in Munich, he studied from 1902 at the Academie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens.

In 1908 he returned to Romania. Here he first published satirical drawings in magazines such as Adevărul, Cronica and Facla. After several group exhibitions in 1914 he had his first solo exhibition in Bucharest. Together with artists like Nicolae Darascu, Ştefan Dimitrescu, Iosif Iser, Marius Bunescu, Dimitrie Paciurea, Cornel Medrea, Ion Jalea and Oscar Han 1917 he founded the artists' association Arta Română.

In 1921 he was one of the founding members of the Sindicatul Artiştilor plastici din România, which he chaired until 1923. By 1941 he was a professor and rector of the National University of Bucharest arts. In 1950 he became honorary president of the Union Plastic Artist, 1955, he was awarded the title of People's Artist.
