Camille Erlanger

Camille Erlanger ( born May 25, 1863 in Paris, † April 24, 1919 ) was a French composer.

Camille Erlanger studied at the Paris Conservatory under Léo Delibes and won in 1888 with the cantata Veleda the Premier Grand Prix de Rome. His first opera Saint Julien l' hospitalier on a story by Gustave Flaubert, which was written during his stay in Rome, was premiered in 1894 at the Conservatoire de Paris and made him suddenly famous in Paris.

The most successful of his operas was Aphrodite, which was premiered in 1906 at the Opéra -Comique with Mary Garden in the title role. Erlanger's last work Forfaiture was the first opera, which was based on a feature film ( The Cheat ), and was premiered by Erlanger's death in 1921 at the Opéra -Comique. In addition to operas composed Erlanger several serenades, a symphonic suite (La Chasse fantastique ) and songs based on Russian folk seals.

The son Erlanger is the historian and founder of the Film Festival of Cannes, Philippe Erlanger.
