Camille-Marie Stamaty

Camille -Marie Stamaty ( born March 23, 1811 in Rome, † April 19, 1870 in Paris) was a French pianist and composer.

Stamaty, son of Greek- Italian parents, studied from 1830 with Friedrich Kalkbrenner in Paris and was regarded as the best student. From him he took the art of piano playing from the force of the fingers out (instead of the forearm ), which he later taught. He also studied with Felix Mendelssohn in Leipzig in 1836.

From 1837 was Stamaty professor of piano in Paris. His own career as a pianist was unsettled due to rheumatic complaints. Among his many students count Camille Saint- Saens and Louis Moreau Gottschalk.

Stamatys compositions, many for piano, are mostly forgotten. From its exercise works for piano, some kept in print, especially Le Rythme des doigts: exercises types à l'aide du métronome, op 36
