Camp Bastion

Camp Bastion is a great camp of the armed forces of the United Kingdom in Afghanistan northwest of Lashkar Gah. It was created in 2006 and covers an area of four miles in length and two miles in width. There are several thousand British soldiers are stationed and there is a field hospital and a large private airfield. Within Camp Bastion is the U.S. military camp Camp Barber and the Danish camp Camp Viking. In the neighborhood there is also the nearly 3 square miles large U.S. military camp Camp Leatherneck and the camp Camp Shorabak the Afghan National Army.

The camp is also the headquarters of the British in May 2006 led multinational Provincial Reconstruction Team. In addition to British PRT Lashkar Gah participate in the representatives of the United States, Denmark and Estonia. It includes about 250 people.

The camp was attacked several times. In the raid of 14 September 2012, two U.S. Marines were killed, and six Harrier II fighter aircraft were destroyed, two were heavily damaged. On 1 October 2013, the two major generals, Charles Gurganus and Gregg Sturdevant were dismissed from the service because they had not taken sufficient precautions to protect the camp. It was the first dismissal of generals due to errors in combat since the Vietnam War.
