Camp Wood is a city in Real County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies on the Nueces River, south-west of the geographical center of Texas, about 170 kilometers west of San Antonio at the intersection of State Route 55 to the Texas Farm Road 337 and has a total area of 1.3 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The settlement was founded in 1920 by workers of Uvalde Cedar Company. It was named after the former ( 1857-1861 ) located near an outpost of the U.S. military Camp Wood. In 1920, the city 's most northerly stop on the Uvalde and Northern Railroad. The first post office was put into operation in 1921 and 1936 Camp Wood was incorporated as a city.

Made headlines the place in April 1924, when Charles Lindbergh, three years before his Atlantic crossing, here had to perform an unscheduled stopover.
