Campagnatico

Campagnatico is a municipality with 2476 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site covers about 162 km ². It is located about 20 km northeast of Grosseto and about 100 km south of Florence in the valley of the Ombrone and the wine region of Montecucco and the Morellino di Scansano.

Its neighborhoods include Arcille, Marrucheti, Montorsaio and Sant'Antonio.

The neighboring municipalities are Arcidosso, Cinigiano, Civitella Paganico, Grosseto, Roccalbegna, Rocca Strada and Scansano.

History

The town was founded as a branch of the monastery Abbazia del San Salvatore and stood since the year 973 the Aldobrandeschi. After the death of Omberto Aldobrandeschi 1259 the place passed into the sphere of Siena.

In 1155, Arnold of Brescia was at the castle briefly shelter before he was shipped to troops of Frederick Barbarossa, after they had captured a Viscounts of Campagnatico.

After the defeat of the Sienese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence, the city fell to the Duchy of Tuscany as well ( such as Siena ).

Palio dei Ciuchi

Since 1957, a Palio in honor of Mary ( Santissima Madonna delle Grazie ) found in Campagnatico every Sunday after September 8 ( Nativity of Mary ) instead. The four districts Contrada Castello, Rione Centro, Rione Rione and Pieve Santa Maria come here for ' Palio dei Ciuchi ' on. This riding competition for a painted flag (similar to Siena) is carried out in Campagnatico on donkeys, in Siena on the other hand rode on horses. The course runs along the Via Roma, the Town Hall and ends at the hill that leads to the schools. The rules provide for two races. In the first attended by all four Contraden, in the finale, are then only the two winners of the first race against.

  • Rocca aldobrandesca, castle of Aldobrandeschi, originated in the 10th century.
