History and Technology

Tullio Campagnolo was racing cyclist and had in the Italian town of Vicenza, a small workshop. In a cycle race on November 11, 1927, he lost the ball Croce d' Aune in the Dolomites much time in trying to unscrew the rear in the snows and turn (then the only way the move to change the translation). He then devised a solution to simplify and accelerate the impeller change: He invented the Quick release for bicycle hubs. In 1930 he invented the derailleur linkage.

This was followed by the articulated parallelogram of the linkage circuit as a further circuit. This type of circuit is still the foundation of all derailleurs. Tullio retired from active cycling in order to devote himself entirely to the construction of bicycle components.

In 1940 he hired his first employee; In 1950, 123 employees already employed by Campagnolo. 1955, the first complete component group was presented for bicycles. Already in the 1940s, people began to use the name Campagnolo on equipment and clothing by cyclists. Famous race drivers, such as the legendary Fausto Coppi, contributed Campagnolo. However, this clothing and equipment such as jerseys, hats and water bottles not self-produced Campagnolo, but imported them from suppliers.

In early 2000 the company went on to produce and distribute clothing itself. These emerged in 2000 until the company Abacus 2000, which later in the Campagnolo Sportswear Srl has been renamed. In 2004 came the company Fulcrum Wheels S.r.l. added, which should complement the range of high-quality wheels and cranks Campagnolo Campagnolo technology without lettering for road bikes. Since 2008, Fulcrum Wheels also offers a complete range of wheels for mountain bikes.

Campagnolo employs around 690 people worldwide and in fiscal year 2004/2005 an annual turnover of 101 million euros. The company headquarters is located in Vicenza, Italy. Production takes place in Italy, Romania, China and Taiwan. After Campagnolo in the 1990s, also BMX, Tandem, ATB and mountain bike components ( groups Euclid, chorus ATB, Olympus, Centaur, Icarus and Record OR), engines for racing, helicopter components, satellites and defense projects, formerly rims and other produced components for Formula 1 to Campa has withdrawn from this market again and is currently exclusively components for racing bikes ago.

Technology

Technical developments of the recent past have included the 11- speed drivetrain (calculated up to 22 courses available), the massive use of carbon in components, as well as the G3 spoke ratio on wheels. In the mid- 1990s tried Campagnolo an electrical circuit that has been tested already on the wheels of professionals from GS1 or ProTour teams during major competitions (such as the Tour de France, Paris -Roubaix, Paris - Nice). Electronic 11-speed circuits were produced by Campagnolo from 2012 series. The abbreviation EPS behind the group name indicates. Since 2009, Campagnolo produced the first mechanical 11-speed circuit weighing less than 2 kg.

Besides the production of racing groups, the production of wheels makes the second major portion of the Company business. Since 1999, Campagnolo offers its wheels from the factory also with HG -compatible hubs.

Competitors and compatibility

Direct competitors are the Japanese company Shimano and the U.S. bicycle component manufacturer SRAM.

While until the mid- 90s, many Campagnolo - switching groups were prepared so that they are compatible with components from Shimano, for example, this is no longer the case with newer switching groups. However, all Campagnolo eleven times parts are compatible with each other, regardless of which group they belong to. The same applies to all components of the company tenfold. In contrast, the eleven -and ten -component can not be combined because of different sensing ranges.
