The Marian bellflower ( Campanula medium ) is a flowering plant in the genus of the bellflower (Campanula ).

Description

It is a biennial herbaceous plant that forms rosettes of leaves the first year and then in the second stems and flowers. The basal leaves are lanceolate to elliptical and 12 to 15 cm long with serrated leaf edge. It reaches heights of growth about 60 to 80 cm.

The flowers are borne in a loose racemose inflorescence. The short -stalked, large, hermaphrodite flower is 2.5 to 4 cm in size and fünfzählig. The five sepals are fused only at their base. The five petals are fused bell- shaped; their colors are according to variety different shades of blue, white or pink. The corolla lobes are bent. It's just a circle with five fertile stamens present. There are five pen available. The flowering period extends from May to July. It is formed a capsule fruit.

Occurrence

The Marian Bellflower and their varieties is now spread almost all over Europe. It comes from Italy / South East France. Since the 16th century it belongs to the German cottage garden.

As a location it prefers fresh, loose, nutrient-rich places without waterlogging.
