Campanus (crater)

Campanus is an impact crater in southwestern lunar front side between Mare Nubium and Palus Epidemiarum, southeast of the crater Hippalus and immediately northwest of Mercator. The somewhat irregularly shaped crater rim is slightly eroded and has to largely flat toward the interior of terracing.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian mathematician and astronomer Campanus of Novara.
