In the first year 1902 there was only one league with five clubs. Today there are four leagues, the Primera Divisão A1, A2, A3, and the Segunda Divisão. The 20 clubs are in the leagues A1, A2 and A3. Approximately 48 clubs ( depending on the year, swaying slightly ) participate in the Segunda Divisão.
