Campli

Campli is a municipality with 7167 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) and is located near Civitella del Tronto and Bell Ante in the Italian province of Teramo. The town is a member of the Comunità Montana della Laga and lies partially within the boundaries of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.

Geography

Among the districts ( fractions) include Battaglia, Campovalano, Castel Nuovo, Cesena, Floriano, Gagliano, Garrufo, Guazzano, Molviano, Nocella, Pagannoni, Paterno, Piancarani, Roiano, Onofrio and Villa Camera.

Borders the following municipalities: Bell Ante, Civitella del Tronto, Sant'Omero, Teramo, Torricella Sicura and Valle Castellana.

The community is located approximately 11.5 km from the capital of the province, the city of Teramo and around 30 km from the Adriatic coast.

History

The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, it was found in the area around Campli a necropolis with numerous tombs, dating from the 5th century BC. At that time the area was conquered by the Romans and was afterwards for many centuries under Roman rule. For further excavations, the archaeologists also met with other finds from the Bronze Age, including coins, fragments of an inscription and the remains of a temple.

The settlement was first mentioned in writing in Campli year 894.

In the Middle Ages, the first churches in Campli, the collegiate Collegiate Church of Santa Maria in Platea and Chiesa di San Francesco emerged. On the site, the titular Camplum goes back.

In the surroundings of the village vines of Montepulciano are grown for the DOC wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
