History
Origin and foundation of the city lie largely in the dark. Presumably, it was created as a fortified camp of the Lombards at the foot of the castle hill today before the 8th century. Originally the site " campus vassorum " was called. After the Normans had conquered in the 11th century southern Italy, the settlement to the commercial and administrative center developed. Between 1330 and 1745 the Monforte - Gambatesa ruled over the city. They left the castle and build a coin. Later, the city the Di Capua, Gonzaga, Vitagliano, Carafa and various Roman families belonged.
