Campobello di Mazara

Campobello di Mazara is a city in the province of Trapani in Sicily region of Italy, with 11,774 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Campobello di Mazara is not far from the mouth of the river Modione in the Mediterranean Sea 75 km south of Trapani. The city covers an area of 65 km ². Main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and viticulture. Tre Fontane and Torretta Granitola are districts of the municipality.

Borders the following municipalities: Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo.

History

The town was founded in 1623 by Giuseppe di Napoli.

The name of Campobello ( German Beautiful field ) may be wrong at first glance, but the name is derived from Campo Bellico, meaning " Warlike field " means in German. Probably Campobello was a battleground against the Saracens in the Middle Ages.
