Canabae

As canabae or canabae legionis civilian camp village ( vicus ) is called in Roman legion camps.

The term is first used in the Augustan period for settlements in the camps in Germania. Originally designated canabae the stalls of shopkeepers and wine merchants, it was found later the function of canabae legionis that have been mentioned in the course of time abbreviated canabae. They were of the intersection between the civilian population in a province or an occupied territory and the legionaries, both economically and culturally. The legal status of canabae varied. Mark is an independent community life with its own administration from magistrates and officials. Small settlements are also called uicus / vicus. Some of these settlements remained even after the deduction of related Legion exist and could develop to a municipium.
