Canadian federal election, 1925

The 15th Canadian General Election (English 15th Canadian General Election, French 15e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 29 October 1925. Were elected 245 Members of the Canadian House of Commons (English House of Commons, French Chambre des Communes ). While the Liberal Party of William Lyon Mackenzie King was defeated, it formed with the consent of the Progressive Party, a minority government. Shortly afterwards, the King Byng affair shook the country, which is already in the following year led to new elections.

The choice

The Liberals of Prime Minister King won fewer seats than the Conservative Party led by Arthur Meighen, however missed the latter an absolute majority. King decided to remain with the support of the Progressive Party in power. The progressives who differed in ideological terms but little from the Liberals fought on the side of Kings, who was able to form a minority government.

This was problematic in that King had been defeated in his own constituency and without the House actually mandate should never have been govern. Meighen was outraged over Kings approach and demanded his resignation as Prime Minister. King, however, asked the liberal deputies from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to withdraw and thereby trigger a by-election. Prince Albert was one of the safest constituencies for the Liberals across Canada and King won easily against his conservative rival John Diefenbaker ( later Prime Minister ).

A little later, a scandal shook the Cabinet, when it became known that one of the members of the Cabinet had accepted bribes. King feared a defeat in the House and, therefore, asked the Governor General Julian Byng to dissolve Parliament and to organize new elections. But Byng refused and replaced by the King - Byng affair of. But just three months after King's resignation, the new Conservative government of Arthur Meighen lost a vote of no confidence. Then elections were held in September 1926 but that ended with a victory of the Liberals.

The turnout was 66.4 %.
