Canadian federal election, 1953

The 22nd Canadian House elections ( engl. 22nd Canadian General Election, French 22e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 10 August 1953. Were elected 265 Members of the Canadian House of Commons (English House of Commons, French Chambre des Communes ).

The choice

Prime Minister Louis Saint -Laurent led the Liberal Party for the second time on the election victory, although it achieved a slightly lower share of the vote and lost 22 seats to other parties. For the fifth consecutive year, the Liberals were able to form the government. The Progressive Conservative Party with George Alexander Drew, the former Prime Minister of Ontario, at the top it was possible as early as 1949 not to improve significantly and remained in opposition.

For the first time the right to vote were the Inuit. The turnout was 67.5 %.
