Canadian federal election, 1965

The 27th Canadian General Election (English 27th Canadian General Election, French 27e élection fédérale canadienne ) took place on 8 November 1965. Were elected 265 Members of the Canadian House of Commons (English House of Commons, French Chambre des Communes ). Although the previously governing Liberal Party of Prime Minister Lester Pearson was able to win some seats, but missed it again just an absolute majority and was forced to form a minority government.

The choice

The Liberals pointed to the redemption of their election promises from 1963, especially job creation, reduction of income tax and higher family allowances and student loans. The closest major projects, the introduction of a general state health care and a pension system could also be implemented up to the next elections with the support of smaller parties.

Despite lost election, the former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker initially claimed as party leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, but was defeated in 1967 at the Congress party and had the office of Robert Stanfield exits.

While the New Democrats by Tommy Douglas recorded the largest increase in the share of the vote, but resulted because of the electoral system, only four additional seats. From the Social Credit Party of Canada a French-speaking party, the Ralliement had by internal power struggles créditiste cleaved, which achieved a better result than the English-speaking parent party.
