Canadian Grand Prix

As Canadian Grand Prix, a round of the Formula 1 World Championship is held annually since 1967 in Canada, with the exception of 1975, 1987 and 2009. Previously found under the same name already sports car race held: From 1961 to 1965, during the Canadian Sports Car Championship and in the 1966 CanAm series.

The first Canadian Grand Prix in Formula 1 was carried out on the Mosport Park, about 100 km east of Toronto, in the 1967 season, there were previously the sports car race also designated as Grand Prix of Canada. 1968 and 1970 found the race on Mont- Tremblant, close to the village of Saint- Jovite in the province of Quebec instead. In 1969 and from 1971 to 1977 was again the Mosport Park venue of the Grand Prix of Canada. From 1978, the Formula 1 race took place at the Circuit Gilles -Villeneuve (until 1981 called Circuit Ile Notre -Dame), Montreal. At the Grand Prix of Canada in 1982, the Italian racer Riccardo palletizing died in a collision in the start-finish area killed.

For the 2009 Formula 1 season of the Canadian Grand Prix was not included in the racing calendar. The reason was to Formula 1 promoter Bernie Ecclestone that the operators of the route still owe payments for past races .. The organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix disagreed, but acknowledged that there are different views about the extent of its obligations. Rescue attempts involving the City of Montreal and the Canadian government eventually failed because they could not agree on payments for future races with Ecclestone.

The Grand Prix of Canada 2011 on June 12, 2011 was the longest time ( 4:04:39,537 h) and slowest (average speed 74.864 km / h ) race in Formula 1 history. This was due to heavy rains and multiple accidents that resulted in a total of 30 safety car laps ( another record ).
