Canadian Mathematical Society

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS ) (French: Société mathématique du Canada (SMC ) ) is the union of Mathematicians in Canada. The main office of the CMS is in Ottawa.

It was founded in June 1945 as the Canadian Mathematical Congress. To avoid confusion with the four -yearly mathematical conventions, a name change was considered for many years. In 1979 was renamed held in Canadian Mathematical Society. The stated goal of CMS is to promote research, teaching and application of mathematics. They host two annual meetings of three days each. Sometimes they cooperate on this with the Canadian Statistical Society (French Société statistique du Canada, SSC ), the Canadian version of the SIAM ( French acronym: SCMAI, Société canadiennes of Mathématiques appliquées et industrial ), the Canadian Society for Philosophy and History of Mathematics (French: Société canadienne d' histoire et de la philosophie des mathématiques, SCHPM ) and the Canadian Operations Research society ( Société canadienne de recherche french opération nelle, SCRO ). They cooperate in their meetings with the American Mathematical Society and since 2004 also with Société Mathématique de France.

The main publications of the Canadian Mathematical Society, the mathematical journals

  • Canadian Journal of Mathematics ( CJM ), French Canadien Journal of Mathématiques ( JCM ), since 1949, mainly for larger items
  • Canadian Mathematical Bulletin ( CMB), French Canadien Bulletin of Mathématiques (BCM ), since 1958, for more shorter posts

For exceptional contributions to their two magazines for the Company to G. de B. Robinson Award gives. The journal Crux Mathemati Corum ( with Mathematical Mayhem ) applies with the release of mathematical problems to students, the newsletter of the CMS Notes. The CMS supports Rendus the Royal Society of Canada in the publication of its Comptes. A separate book series of the CMS will be published by Springer Verlag.

The company worked with the three Canadian research institutes for mathematics together, which was founded in 1969 Center for Mathematical Research ( Centre de Recherches Mathématiques ) in Montreal, the Fields Institute ( founded in 1992 ) and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences ( founded in 1996 ) in Vancouver. 2003 also the Research Institute was founded BIRS ( Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery ), which is funded in part by the U.S. NSF and in part by the Canadian CRSNG.
