History

In the first half of the 19th century of the Tarn between Albi and his mouth was navigable in the Garonne at a distance of around 150 kilometers. Since the Garonne always had a very unsafe water conditions, they built the Canal de Garonne, which was taken on the route Toulouse- Montauban Montech into operation in 1844. It was not until around 15 years later, the Garonne Lateral Canal was built in its present route further, whereby the portion Montech Montauban became a branch channel. This route was heavily used until the beginning of the 20th century by cargo ships. After the cargo shipping has gradually lost importance.

In 1990, the canal was closed for renovations. Since 2003 he has been reopened and is mainly used by sports and houseboats. The connection to the Tarn years was interrupted, however, the double lock is back in operation since 2011.
