Candiac, Quebec

Candiac is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is located in the Montérégie administrative region, about 15 km south of the center of Montreal. Candiac is part of the regional county municipality ( municipalité régional du comté ) Roussillon, has an area of ​​17.59 km ² and has 19,876 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

Candiac is located in the region Rive- Sud on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River and is part of the community association Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal. Neighboring communities are La Prairie in the Northeast, Saint -Philippe in the east, Saint -Mathieu in the south, Saint-Constant in the southwest and Delson in the West.

History

Compared with the surrounding communities Candiac is a relatively young settlement. It was founded on 31 January 1957, when the provincial government of Quebec the Canadian- European investors group Candiac Development Corporation granted permission to acquire an area of ​​slightly more than 10 km ². The utilized agricultural area was formerly part of the municipalities of Saint -Philippe, La Prairie, Delson and Saint- Constant.
