Canepina

Canepina is a municipality with 3127 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Canepina is located 68 km north of Rome and 16 km east of Viterbo. The town is located on the eastern slopes of the Monti Cimini east of Lake Vico. The Monti Cimini are some 4.5 million years ago volcanic arisen highlands. Lake of Vico is located in a dormant caldera.

Canepina is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini.

The neighboring municipalities are Caprarola, Soriano nel Cimino, Viterbo and Vallerano.

Place name

The name derives from Canepina Canapa ( hemp). Until the 17th century, mainly hemp was grown around the place.

History

Numerous findings prove that the area was inhabited since the Etruscan period. However Canepina was first mentioned only 1093rd At that time, the municipality of Viterbo gave the place to the Pope. 1534 gave Pope Paul III. Canepina his son Pier Luigi Farnese II, the annexing it to his Duchy of Castro. 1649, after the destruction of Castro, it fell back to the Papal States.

Policy

Maurizio Palozzi (PD ) was elected in June 2004 to the mayor and re-elected in 2009. His center-left list, also with 11 of 16 seats, the majority in the City Council.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a golden crown on a red shield and two crossed green palm branches. Both results indicate the martyrdom of the local saints Santa Corona. The crown as canting arms (corona = crown), the palm branches as a reminder of the martyrdom. Corona said to have been strung between two palm trees and so torn.

Specialty

A specialty is Fieno di Canepina (hay of Canepina ), particularly finely cut egg noodles.

The main agricultural products are chestnuts. 25,000 dz chestnuts are produced annually at 1,500 hectares. In October, the Giornate della Castagne be celebrated (days of the chestnut ). Canepina is a member of the Association Città del Castagno (City of chestnut).
