Canino

Canino is a municipality in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region Latium, located about 5275 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Canino is on the edge of the Monti Volsini between Lake Bolsena and Tuscania. It is part of the Maremma Laziale. Canini is located 111 km northeast of Rome, 130 km south of Siena, 42 km west of Viterbo. The municipality covers an altitude 19-436 m slm

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (slightly endangered).

The neighboring communities of Canino are Cellere, Ischia di Castro, Manciano (GR), Montalto di Castro, Tessennano and Tuscania.

Traffic

Canino is situated on the state road SS 312 Via Castrense that leads from Lake Bolsena to the Via Aurelia at Montalto di Castro. The nearest train station is 21 km away in Montalto di Castro.

History

In the Middle Ages Canino and belonged to the Farnese. From 1534 to 1649 it belonged to the Duchy of Castro, the Pope Paul III. , Alessandro Farnese civil, transcribed for his illegitimate son, Pier Luigi Farnese II. After the destruction by Pope Urban VIII, it was incorporated into the Papal States.

1814, Pope Pius VII Lucien Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, Prince of Canino. Lucien Bonaparte was around Canino, among other subjects, in Vulci extensive excavations, which mainly Etruscan remains have been found.

Policy

Mauro Pucci from the right Citizens' List Renewal Caninese was elected in May 2011 to the mayor. His list also provides 8 out of 12 seats, the majority in the City Council. He solved Lina Novelli (center - left coalition ) (2006 - 2011) from which did not run.

Canino seeks a community partnership with the community Nufringen, Böblingen, Baden- Württemberg, at. In autumn 2009, a delegation from Canino after Nufringen, the return visit was in autumn 2010.

Attractions

  • The old town, called Le Buche, still has a closed medieval townscape.
  • The Palazzo Bonaparte was built by Giuseppe Valadier for Lucien Bonaparte.
  • The parish church of Santi Giovanni e Andrea Apostoli was built in 1783-1793 in place of a medieval church.
  • The church of Santa Croce is the oldest church Caninos.
  • The former monastery of San Francesco was founded in the 15th century by Gabriele Francesco Farnese.
  • On the road to Ischia di Castro, the ruins of the fortress town Castellardo lie with the remains of cave dwellings. It was first mentioned in 1175 and destroyed in 1459 by the Caninesi.
  • Canino has Anteila the archaeological park of the ancient city of Vulci, especially the necropolis di Ponte Rotto with the tombs Tumulo della Cuccumella, Tomba delle Iscrizioni and the Tomba François.

Specialty

Canino is famous for its olive oil, which has been awarded the designation of origin DOP. Canino is the center of the cultivation of green asparagus. Every year in April will take place the Sagra dell'Asparago ( asparagus festival ) here.
