Cannalonga

Cannalonga is a village with 1068 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in Campania in the province of Salerno. The place is part of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, as well as the Comunità Montana Zona del Gelbison e Cervati. The nearest town of Vallo della Lucania, and is located three kilometers to the south.

History

The village was founded by the Greeks between the 9th and 10th centuries. It was known in the region in 1450, when the tradition of the festival Fiera di Santa Lucia began. Today the festival is better known under the name Fiera della Frecagnola.

Etymology

Some people believe that the name goes back to the large number of bamboo plants ( Italian Canne di bambù ) that exist in the area. Others claim that the name of the old unit " canna " was derived.
