Cannon House Office Building

The Cannon House Office Building is the oldest office building of the Congress of the United States. It was completed in 1908. Designed in the style of Beaux -Arts architecture building is located south of the Capitol between Independence Avenue and New Jersey Avenue.

The main view of the building divided architecturally into a broad base on which a row of columns with balustrade and cornice rests. The portico consists of 34 Doric columns that are framed on both sides by pilasters. As a building material for the facade of marble and limestone was used, the base is made of gray granite. Inside the building is mainly the rotunda of architectural merit. It is surrounded by 18 Corinthian columns which support a dome. Two marble staircases lead from the ground floor in a meeting room with rich ceiling and wall decorations.

The Cannon House Office Building was expanded several times and rebuilt to meet the changing with the time requirements: as early as 1913, six years after the reference by the Members of the House of Representatives, the office space had become scarce and another floor was set up. The building was given in 1962 in honor of Joseph Gurney Cannon its present name.
