The EOS 350D ( also in North America EOS digital Rebel XT in Japan EOS Kiss Digital N ) is one of Canon digital SLR camera. She came in March 2005 as a successor to the Canon EOS 300D and was superseded by the EOS 400D in September 2006, but was still commercially available in 2007.

Description

The 350D is a further development of the 300D; they do has features and components of the Canon EOS 20D, which belongs to a higher product class. This includes the use of the DIGIC II image processor for faster image processing, which was first installed in the EOS 20D and the EOS -1Ds Mark II. Compared to the 20D 350D missing seven functions in the menu as well as a studio flash connector; Furthermore, it has a minimal lower resolution. The autofocus measuring 350D has seven fields in comparison to nine in the 20D can be controlled both automatically and manually. Also, are possible with the 20D up to five images at full resolution (RAW) per second.

Other differences are housing size and processing and the material used. The case of the 20D consists of a mix of polycarbonate and magnesium, which the 350D made of polycarbonate. The case of the 350D is about 126.5 mm × 94.2 mm × 64 mm lighter and smaller (without battery about 485 g). The lens mount is compatible as in the 20D and the 300D to lenses with Canon-EF/EF-S-Bajonett. The conversion factor of 1.6 is the same as with all two -, three - and four-digit EOS digital cameras.

According to Canon, the structure of the image sensor was compared to the 300D improved so that the color noise is also reduced when using high ISO values. At ISO 400 no color noise can be seen.

The contrast range of the JPEG images is using the default settings according to c't 8.6 f-stops.

A black and white function with five different color filters has been taken over by the 20D.

Individual settings can be made and stored in user profiles. These include color saturation, contrast and sharpness.

They can be stored both images in JPEG format with 24-bit color depth ( 8 bits per color channel ) and in RAW format with 36 -bit color (12 bits per color channel ). When storing raw data or parallel storage ( JPEG plus RAW) will ensure that a high quality image is available, because the Canon RAW data format uses a lossless compression algorithm, and the camera software no processing of the image data ( such as white balance or sharpening ) makes.

The camera controls the flash mode, only the E-TTL mode, so older system flashes like the Canon Speedlite 540EZ work exclusively manually or like the Canon Ring Lite ML -3, did not ignite. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends the use of E-TTL -compatible devices to which the EX- series Speedlite models include.

The 350D is compatible with all EF and EF- S lenses and optics from third parties ( eg, Sigma and Tamron ) compatible.

The battery capacity of the 350D is expandable with the battery grip BG -E3, which is also compatible with the 400D successor. In these six AA batteries or two batteries can be used, also it has additional controls for vertical shooting.

Some differences compared to the 300D

  • Resolution 8 megapixels ( 3456 × 2304)
  • Mirror lock-up
  • Faster DIGIC II image processor
  • Switch-on time of 0.2 seconds
  • 2.9 Burst / s and max. 23 JPEG images and RAW 6 in a row ( According to Canon even higher values with fast storage medium are possible)
  • Simultaneous storage of RAW and JPEG data
  • The resolution of the TFT monitor is 115,000 pixels as opposed to 118,000 pixels in the 300D.
  • Lighter and smaller camera body
  • USB 2.0 interface
  • Noise Reduction Long exposure

Technology

Current consumption

Power consumption of the camera as measured by SN 2730706701 in various operating states. The TFT monitor at a medium level, unless otherwise specified brightness.

  • The processor is active only briefly and then goes back into a power saving mode
  • Main consumers of long exposures is the electrical holding mechanism of the triggered level

In addition, the power consumption for the flash and the writing of the memory card.

Firmware Hack

In the environment of CHDK project firmware chopping was developed which, inter alia, offers the following new features:

  • ISO sensitivity expandable to 3200 (like 20D )
  • ISO selectable in 1/3-stop increments (like 20D )
  • Spot metering (like 20D )
  • Return the number of firings
  • White balance by color temperature (like 20D )
  • Turn off the flash (like 20D )
  • Safety Shift (like 20D )
  • Advanced Bracketing ( exposure up to 6 levels instead of 2)
  • Automatic burst shooting mode ( Time Lapse ) ( experimental)
