Canon T80

The Canon T80, presented in April 1985 and discontinued in June 1986 was Canon's first autofocus 35mm SLR camera. She was part of the T series with FD bayonet mount and is not compatible with Canon's later EOS system and its autofocus EF mount lenses. Instead, three special lenses for the T80 were offered. Other FD -mount lenses could also be connected, but without autofocus capabilities.

Autofocus

The autofocus system of T80 operates similarly to the focusing assist system of the earlier AL -1. A linear CCD checks the contrast in the focal plane. The three special autofocus lenses were each equipped with its own motor and electrical contacts that linked the focusing drive with the measuring system of the camera.

Auto exposure and Programs

Aside from the autofocus capabilities of the T80 T70 earlier issued was very similar. Both have four exposure modes in addition to the usual fully automatic exposure program, namely:

  • Deep Focus - the camera sets a small aperture as possible in order to have as much depth of field.
  • Shallow focus - the camera chooses the largest possible aperture to achieve shallow depth of field. Can be used as in portrait photography.
  • Stop Action - the shortest possible exposure time to capture moving subjects can, such as in sports or wildlife photography.
  • Flowing - longer exposure time to achieve blur effects with moving subjects.
  • Program - usual full program.

Film transport

The film transport of the T80 was fully motorized in both directions. Also, the clamping of the film was automated, the user had to do was drag the film strip to an orange marker and close the rear cover. The LCD panel on top of the camera is displayed, if the movie being loaded, transported, or has been rewound. Motor and camera electronics were powered by four micro cells ( AAA).

AC lenses

Three special autofocus lenses with the label AC were offered for the T80. Each had a built-in focus motor. The lenses stand out with an asymmetric bulge on the side, also has a red ring around the front lens element points to the particular technique.

The lenses are:

  • AC 50mm f/1.8
  • AC 35 -70mm f/3.5-4.5
  • AC 75 -200mm f/4.5

All three, as the T80 itself, were only produced for a short time and are rare. The auto focus does not work on other camera bodies, but the AC lenses can focus manually on other Canon FD cameras. However, the AC lenses do not have an aperture ring, so that any useful work only with cameras is possible to adjust the bezel from the chassis.

Canon gave up the attempt to develop an autofocus system with the "old " FD bayonet, quickly and struck with the 1987 featured the EOS system an entirely new path.

Data back

A CommandsBackColor 80 was available for the T80, with the aid of the recordings could be provided with a time stamp and a serial number. Furthermore, the camera received by the component the ability to interval photos and long exposures to take.
