Canouan

Canouan is an island of the Grenadines, is located about 30 km southwest of Mustique and is part of the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Canouan 13 km ² and has less than 2,000 inhabitants. The most important town on the island is Charlestown. On the island there is an airport.

The most important industry is tourism, luxury tourism in particular. There are two major tourist resorts: Raffles Resort with Golf Course and Casino and Tamarind.

About 200 BC reached the Arawak the island and about 1300 AD were displaced by the Caribs. In the inaccessible heights, the Caribs were here long hold their own against the Europeans, mixed with escaped African slaves and were called Black Caribs. They allowed the French in 1719 a permanent settlement on the island. In the Peace of Aachen (1748 ) was agreed for the island neutrality between England and France. 1763 claimed the British the island again for themselves. After some discussion, the British defeated the black Caribs in 1797 and deported 5,000 of them to British Honduras.
