Cantat is a submarine communications and data cable, which connects Canada with Europe and also Iceland and Faroe Islands. The third generation of the cable ( Cantat -3) was put into operation in 1994 and is from the Indian telecommunications company Teleglobe ( Videsh Sanchar Nigam also ) operated.

History

  • Cantat - 1 was the first Canadian submarine transatlantic telephone cable. The cable was operated from 1961 to 1986 Teleglobe and joined Newfoundland and Scotland.
  • Cantat -2 was the second transatlantic submarine telephone cable. It was operated 1974-1992. It allowed 1,840 simultaneous telephone conversations between Beaver Harbour, Nova Scotia and the United Kingdom. It was operated in cooperation between Teleglobe and the British General Post Office.

Presence

Cantat -3 was put into operation in 1994 and is operated by Teleglobe. On 17 December 2006, the compounds were interrupted because of damage to the submarine cable. They were stopped a few hundred thousand connections such as phone and Internet services from Síminn, Vodafone and HIVE. The repair time was estimated at ten days. On 13 January 2007, the repair work began and lasted until July 28, 2007. On July 29, the cable was fully functional again and reached its full capacity of 2.5 GB / second.
