Canterbury Plains

The Canterbury Plains, dt also Canterbury - level, is a region in the east of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located south of Christchurch and is bounded by the Southern Alps and to the east by the sea in the west. In the north the Plains pass into Hundalee Hills, while to the south connects the plains of North Otago.

The Canterbury - level arose from the debris cones of some large rivers, especially the River Waimakariri, Rakaia River, Selwyn River and the Rangitata River.

The land is only suitable for extensive livestock farming, as it is often plagued by drought. The reason for this is the prevailing north-west wind, which runs along the western side of the Southern Alps to heavy rains, while the east side is very dry.
