Canton of Fricktal

The Canton Frick valley was a canton of the Helvetic Republic. He was then formed from the Austrian territories and consisted of the modern districts of the canton of Aargau Rheinfelden and walking castle. The canton was from 1802 to 1803.

At the end of the 18th century, the Breisgau was still a part of the Habsburg province of western Austria. Also the south of the Rhine located Frick valley was one of them. 1799, a year after the proclamation of the Helvetic Republic, the French troops marched into a Frick Valley. Brothers Karl Fahrländer and Sebastian Fahrländer from Ettenheim and some colleagues were able to implement the creation of an independent canton Frick Valley, thanks to good relationships with leading French and Swiss politicians. They referred it to the peace treaties of Campo Formio (1797 ) and Luneville (1801 ), which provided just that.

In December 1801 a constitution was written in the rectory of Eiken. The new canton was proclaimed on February 20, 1802 finally. As the capital was determined Laufenburg. However, the impetuous action of the governor Sebastian Fahrländer met with criticism. His opponent Johann Baptist Jehle called in September 1802 in a guest house in the Frick community leaders together and told the governor deposed. The capital was then moved to Rheinfelden.

Despite intense diplomatic efforts by the Fricktaler of Canton heard on 19 February 1803 to exist, exactly after one year. Napoleon Bonaparte decreed on 19 March in the Act of Mediation of the merger with the cantons of Aargau and bathing.
