Canton of Linth

The Canton Linth was a canton of the Helvetic Republic. It was formed in 1798 and existed until 1803. Was named the Canton, following the example of the French departments, according to a geographical feature, namely the river Linth. Cantonal capital was Glarus.

History

After the collapse of the old Confederation In 1798, several former common lordships and facing locations in eastern Switzerland into independent cantons declared. With the creation of the Helvetic Republic, these structures were redissolved and summarized in the cantons Linth and Santis.

The Canton Linth was founded on May 4, 1798 a decree by Jean -Jacques Rapinat, Government Commissioner at the French Helvetia army. Despite resistance of the Senate of the Helvetic Republic against this area change of the French General Schauenburg completed the disposal, so that on May 27 the electoral corps of Canton Linth met to determine the deputies of the Parliament of the Helvetic Republic.

The new Canton consisted of the former federal Glarus place with its subject territory Will Mountain and the former subject territories of the town of Schwyz ( courtyards, March, Einsiedeln ) ) and the location Zurich ( Sax ). Then there were the former Common Lordships Uznach, Gaster, Sargans and the city of Rapperswil and the Obertoggenburg, which had previously belonged to the Abbey of St. Gall. The Obertoggenburg was assigned by the Constitution of Malmaison 1801 canton Santis, which was also confirmed by the second Helvetic Constitution of 1802.

The main town was first Glarus, then after the restoration of the Canton of Glarus, the city of Rapperswil.

The Canton Linth was dissolved by the Act of Mediation of Napoleon in 1803, with which Switzerland was given a new constitution, again. Its territory was divided between the new cantons Schwyz ( courtyards, March, Einsiedeln ), Glarus and the Canton of St. Gallen ( Rapperswil, Uznach, Gaster, Sargan, Will Berg, sax, Obertoggenburg ).

The Canton Linth comprised approximately 78'500 inhabitants and was divided into seven districts: (see map)

  • Glarus; Capital of Glarus, 38 electors, 12 700 inhabitants
  • GeopathSchänis; Main place GeopathSchänis, 29 electors, 11 900 inhabitants
  • Rapperswil; Capital Rapperswil, 29 electors, 11 800 inhabitants
