Canton of Lugano

The canton of Lugano, Lugano was the capital a canton, which consisted in the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1803. It included the four Italian-speaking country bailiwicks Lugano, Mendrisio, Locarno and Valmaggia.

After five years the two cantons Bellinzona and Lugano were dictated by Napoléon Act of Mediation in 1803 under the new name of Canton Ticino (Tessin ) combined.
