Canzano

Canzano is a municipality with 1970 inhabitants and is located near Castell Alto and Basciano in the Italian province of Teramo. The town is a member of the Comunità Montana del Vomano, Fino e Piomba.

Geography

Among the districts ( fractions) include Piano di Corte, Piano Vomano, San Martino, Santa Lucia, Santa Maria, Sodere and Valle Canzano.

The neighboring municipalities are Castell Alto, Cermignano and Teramo.

The municipality is situated approximately 15 km from the capital of the province, the city of Teramo and 22 km from the Adriatic coast.

History

The area was inhabited in Roman times and was part of the settlement Interamnia Pretuttiorum. From that time finds were found consisting of arrows and flint. From the 9th century comes a large necropolis with numerous graves containing various supplements such as swords, daggers, and ceramics. In the Middle Ages in the area resulted in several church towers and fortifications. The tower fortification from the 15th century, which was built including a wall that survived the last century as a fragment.

One of the oldest buildings in Canzano the Chiesa di San Salvatore is one of the 12th century. The church was built in the Romanesque style situated next to a cemetery and has a chapel. In the 14th century the family Acquaviva, built a city wall built around the town.
