Capalbio

Capalbio is a municipality with 4127 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany.

Geography

The municipality covers about 109 km ². It is located about 45 km southeast of Grosseto, about 150 km south of Florence and 6 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is part of the Maremma countryside and is located on the Via Aurelia.

Among the districts ( frazioni ) include Borgo Carige, Capalbio Scalo, Chiarone, Giardino, La Torba, Pescia Fiorentina and Selva Nera.

The neighboring municipalities are Manciano, Montalto di Castro ( VT) and Orbetello.

History

In the 12th century Capalbio is the first time mentioned. In the document it is mentioned that the Tre Fontane Abbey is owned by Capalbio. Up to this point, the history of the place was closely linked to the Aldobrandeschi. In the 13th century it first then fell to Orvieto, to the Republic of Siena, the Orsini assumed the place. After the defeat of the Sienese in 1555 against the Republic of Florence Capalbio was in 1557 part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
