They named the rocky picturesque foothills by Anne of Denmark, the wife of English King James I. ( The naming was carried out analogously to Cape Cod, which was formerly known as Cape James! )

One of the worst ever maritime disasters in the region occurred on 26 November 1898, when a severe storm that hit the coast of New England and more than 450 human lives, off Cape Ann went down the American passenger steamer Portland. All 192 people on board were killed. The storm is therefore ( roughly " The Portland Gale " ) called The Portland Gale.
