Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Complex 5

Cape Canaveral AFS Launch Complex 5 (LC -5) is a disused start ramp of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Merritt Iceland, Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. It was used 1956-1961 for a total of 23 starts, including 16 Redstone and Jupiter seven.

History

From 21 November 1960, the ballistic flights of the Mercury program to the Redstone rocket from Launch Complex 5 took place. The Mercury - Atlas flights took off from Launch Complex 14

After the failure of Mercury - Redstone 1 on 21 October 1960 was Mercury - Redstone 1A on December 19, 1960 successfully. With Mercury - Redstone 2 launched on January 21, 1961, the chimpanzee " Ham ", on May 5, 1961 launched Mercury - Redstone 3 ( Freedom 7 ) and brought Alan Shepard the first American into space. Gus Grissom flew on Mercury - Redstone 4 ( Liberty Bell 7 ) on July 21, 1961 by LC-5 into space and landed after 15 minutes in the Atlantic, where he was rescued by the USS Randolph. Launch Complex 5 is currently in poor condition. All equipment that were required to get started, are in the " Block House " and can be visited. He is now a part of the Air Force Space & Missile Museum.
