The Cape Girardeau Township is one of 10 townships in Cape Girardeau County in the southeast of the U.S. state of Missouri.

Geography

The Cape Girardeau Township is located on the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Illinois. The mouth of the Ohio at Cairo at the interface of the states of Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky is located approximately 60 km south-east.

The Cape Girardeau Township is located at 37 ° 18'46 " north latitude and 89 ° 32'25 " west longitude and extending over 182.5 km ², spread over 173.7 km ² land and 8.8 km ² water surface.

The southern boundary of the Township is formed from the Headwater Diversion Channel, a man-made flood channel which receives next to the Castor River a number of other rivers and south of the town of Cape Girardeau in the Mississippi River empties.

The Cape Girardeau Township borders within the Cape Girardeau County in the southwest on the Welch Township, on the west by the Hubble Township, on the northwest by the Byrd Township and on the north by Randol Township. In the south, the Township is adjacent to the Scott County. To the east of the Mississippi River forms the border with the Union and to the Alexander County, Illinois.

Traffic

The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge connects the city of Cape Girardeau to East Cape Girardeau, Illinois.

Through the Township runs parallel to the Mississippi Interstate 55, which forms the shortest route from St. Louis to Memphis. In the north- west of the township crosses U.S. Highway 61, which also runs parallel to the Mississippi.

In the Cape Girardeau Township also meet the Missouri State Routes 34, 74 and 177 together.

By Cape Girardeau Township runs a railway line of the BNSF Railway, which runs along the entire reaches of the Mississippi.

The nearest airport is immediately to the south of the city but to Scott County located in Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.

Population

In the census of 2010, the Township had 40,563 inhabitants. The population of the township mostly lives in the city of Cape Girardeau ( with a status of "City" ), which forms the center of the entire region. A small portion of the southern parts of the city are already in Scott County.

A smaller part of the population lives outside of settlements scattered throughout the Township and in the community Dutchtown ( the status " Village "), which lies mainly in the Hubble Township.
