Cape Lopez

The Cape Lopez is a flat headland or cape at the end of a peninsula on the Atlantic coast of Gabon, West Africa, northwest of the city of Port -Gentil. The cape is the westernmost point of Africa south of the equator and the southern terminus of the Bay of Bonny (formerly Bight of Biafra ).

On the headland is a lighthouse. Also there is on the east side of the peninsula a petroleum refinery Sogara ( Société de Gabonaise refining), and an oil port on the almost the entire export of this commodity from Gabon done. The operators are a consortium led by France of corporations Total, ExxonMobil and Shell Pizo. The harbor has been built during the French colonial period 1957/1958. 1967 also an oil refinery was built. Oil production, which in 1998 amounted to 17 million tons in Gabon, 2003 decreased to 12.5 million tons with further downward trend.
